Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance

Protection when the worst happens

What Is Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance?

None of us want to think about the worst-case scenario, but a bit of planning can go a long ways towards securing your family's ongoing financial health. With a product like accidental death and dismemberment insurance from Adroit Health Group, you can do just that.

You don't think it could happen to you, but accidents (now called unintentional injuries) are the third highest cause of death. For some age groups, they're the leading cause of death. Life-changing accidents may include falls as well as work or car accidents. If you died or suffered life-changing injuries after one of these accidents, the financial repercussions could be devastating to your family. Accidents do happen, but your family doesn't need to be caught unprepared.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides a measure of financial security if the worst happens. With this product, if a covered accident leads to death or dismemberment, your beneficiaries receive a one-time, tax-free cash benefit of the amount of your choosing.

This benefit can be put towards a number of costs, including:

  • Funeral costs
  • Emergency healthcare costs
  • Living expenses
  • Rehabilitation, especially for dismemberment cases

This product is also called AD&D insurance or accidental death insurance. At Adroit Health Group, we craft affordable insurance products that work for today's families. To learn more about this type of insurance, keep reading or contact our team today.

Our new member representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM (Central). Our team can answer any of your questions and provide estimated quotes for premiums. Feel free to give our team a call at 1 (800) 269-3563 or send us an email to learn more.

How Does Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance Work?

If you suffered a life-changing (or ending) accident, an AD&D plan provides a cash benefit to your beneficiaries. Those who are in high-risk occupations, like firefighters or factory workers, may find greater piece of mind with an AD&D plan. If you enjoy a high-risk activity, like spelunking, these plans provide protection while you keep doing the things you love.

Your benefit amount is fixed at the time you set up your plan. It's also tax-free when your family receives it. Your beneficiaries can use the benefit towards any costs they choose. It could cover funeral expenses, but it could also pay for rent or other bills if you have a severe injury that impacts your ability to work.

Both full and partial payouts can occur. For example, your policy may pay 100% of your benefit in the case of death. If you lose a limb, it may pay 50%. Likewise, an accident that leads to full hearing loss may pay 50% of your benefit. Your policy will explain the exact payouts for any covered accidents.

There are a few types of accidental death and dismemberment plans. Your traditional health insurance plan might come with an optional AD&D rider that you can elect to add to your existing policy. The plans at Adroit Health Group are a supplemental product that you can purchase as standalone coverage. Some plans also allow you to purchase only accidental death or accidental dismemberment coverage.

Since it's a limited insurance product, these plans are usually more affordable than a general life insurance policy, as we'll discuss shortly. If you or a family member is at higher risk for accidents, these plans can provide ongoing peace of mind for a low monthly cost.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance vs. life insurance

Both AD&D and life insurance plans offer benefits after a death. They are different in a few key ways, though.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance is a limited and specific insurance product. Your beneficiaries receive payouts only if a covered accident leads to death or severe injury. This leads to lower premium costs, but a smaller range of uses. Since it is limited in scope, the vast majority of people can apply and receive coverage within one day. You do not need to complete a medical exam first.

Term life insurance, on the other hand, is a comprehensive, general insurance product. These plans provide coverage over a fixed period of time. Terms are usually ten, twenty, or thirty years. Whole life insurance plans are also available. If you or your spouse passes away prematurely during that period, your beneficiaries receive a pre-defined payout. Unlike AD&D insurance, most causes of death are covered.

With greater coverage come higher premiums, though. In addition, most plans require you to first undergo a medical exam. If it would be difficult for you to pass this exam or you're not in the position financially to pay for life insurance premiums, an AD&D plan may be a good option. Overall, though, AD&D insurance is not a substitute for life insurance. Both have their own uses and benefits. You can learn more about our term life insurance plans here.

What Is Covered Under AD&D Insurance?

The accidental death and dismemberment insurance options we offer at Adroit Health Group cover a variety of accidents. Which specific ones it covers will depend on the policy you choose. In general, AD&D insurance covers accidents related to:

  • Falls
  • Suffocation and choking
  • Drowning
  • Poisoning
  • Fires
  • Lightning or other weather events
  • Accidents on public transportation, like airplanes, taxis, or buses
  • Work-related machinery issues and other accidents

Your insurance provides a benefit in the case of an accidental death, as well as dismemberment. In this case, dismemberment typically refers to:

  • Partial or total loss of a limb, including arms or legs
  • Partial or total loss of a hand or foot
  • Partial or total loss of another vital body part
  • Loss of hearing, sight, or speech
  • Full or partial paralysis

What Is Not Covered By AD&D Insurance?

An accidental death and dismemberment plan protects your family financially if a life-changing accident occurs. These plans are not a substitute for life insurance, which provides benefits to your family after any cause of death. They're also not the same as traditional health insurance, which covers expenses related to mental or physical illnesses or surgery.

Review your plan in detail and ask our team any questions you have. In addition to illnesses, most AD&D plans do not cover deaths or dismemberment caused by:

  • High-risk activities, like skydiving
  • Drug overdose
  • Drinking and driving
  • Suicide or attempt suicide
  • Bacterial infections
  • War

Further, death or dismemberment must be directly caused by an accident, within a certain time frame. Different plans may have different exclusions. If you engage in a high-risk activity, like skydiving, talk to one of our member representatives about plans that could cover you.

Should I Get Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance?

This is a personal question that only you and your family can answer. Those who are in high-risk occupations or engage in high-risk hobbies may find greater peace of mind with this coverage. It's also an option for those who don't qualify for traditional term life insurance.

Ask yourself these questions to determine if this insurance product is right for you:

  • Is anyone in my family at greater risk for accidents?
  • How would my family survive financially without my income or my spouse's?
  • Do we already have term life insurance and/or accidental death riders?
  • Could our family cover the costs of an unexpected accident or loss of income?

For some, accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage is important. Whether it allows you to continue working in a higher-risk job or engage in an activity that you love, this is an affordable insurance product for a little more peace of mind.
