What Is Supplemental Health Insurance?

One of our most popular individual and family options is supplemental health insurance. But, what is it exactly?

A supplemental health insurance plan covers anything beyond your essential medical coverage. Depending on what you choose, it can pay costs not covered by your employer's health plan. This may include high deductibles or co-pays.

Our Adroit Health Group plans are flexible. They can provide coverage if you:

  • Are in-between jobs or under-employed
  • Travel out-of-network often
  • Have costs related to an accident or a critical illness, like cancer
  • Don't have access to dental insurance or vision insurance through your employer
  • Need a "Medigap" policy to cover costs that Medicare doesn't

Basically, these plans are used in addition to your current health insurance. They don't take the place of minimum health insurance. Because of that, they do not fulfill minimum Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements.

Instead, these plans protect you against:

  • The financial impact of a major illness or injury on your family
  • Loss of income if you're temporarily or permanently unable to work
  • Healthcare costs before meeting your insurance deductible
  • Healthcare costs while traveling out of network

Supplemental insurance is valuable because it's flexible. You can choose the best coverage for you and your situation. Want to learn more? Contact a member of our team for more information.

When Should I Get Supplemental Health Insurance?

If you're thinking about supplemental insurance, ask yourself a few questions to see if it makes sense for you right now.

  • What does my current health insurance cover?
  • What does it not cover?
  • Does my insurance have an annual or lifetime cap?
  • If I got into an accident or got a serious illness, would my insurance cover the costs of it? How much?
  • Can my current savings cover out-of-pocket costs and deductibles?
  • Does the extra cost of supplemental insurance make sense over time?
  • Do I (or a family member) travel out-of-network often?
  • In the case of death or long-term disability, would my family be able to survive without my income?
  • Is it likely that a member of my family or myself will need additional coverage in the future?

For this last question, think of your current health risk factors.

Will any of your children need braces in the next few years? Are you planning on having a child? Are you retiring or moving to part-time or contract work? Is there a history of critical illness in your family? In all of these cases, will your insurance cover the added costs?

All of these questions can help you think more deeply about your true healthcare needs. For many, supplemental insurance provides peace of mind. You can't predict the future, but you can prepare for it.

Do I Need To Get Supplemental Health Insurance?

Each person has to make their own healthcare decisions. It's deeply personal, reflecting your known risk factors and situation. It also depends on the amount of protection you need.

Large families who live on a single income will need help if the worst happens. Likewise, if you're an individual who is striking out on a new career path, a supplemental health insurance plan can give you the peace of mind to make it happen.

What Types Of Supplemental Insurance Are Available?

The biggest benefit of supplemental health insurance is that it's flexible for you and your family. Unlike traditional health insurance where you may have two to three options to choose from, supplemental insurance allows you to pick and choose what you need.

The major types of supplemental insurance include:

  • Dental and vision plans
  • Critical illness plans
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Prescription drug plans
  • Disability insurance

These aren't your only options when it comes to supplemental insurance. You can also choose the amount of coverage you want. You can choose how you receive your benefits. Some plans provide one-time fixed cash benefits after an illness or injury. Others provide daily, weekly, or monthly payouts during a hospital stay.

What's The Difference Between Supplemental And Short-Term Health Insurance?

Short-term health insurance is often confused with supplemental insurance, but it's very different.

Think of supplemental insurance as "in addition to" your regular health plan. It doesn't provide the essential coverage you need. Instead, it adds to your current coverage. You can have insurance through your employer and have supplemental insurance.

Short-term health insurance, on the other hand, is used in place of traditional insurance, but for a temporary period of time. You typically use these plans when you don't have any health coverage. You may need short-term health insurance if:

  • You're in between jobs or unemployed
  • You travel outside of your network coverage area for an extended period of time
  • Your situation has recently changed, due to a divorce, graduation, or other events

These plans typically cover you for up to 90 days, at varying levels of coverage. You can also add supplemental insurance on top of short-term health insurance for greater peace of mind. At Adroit Health Group, we have both supplemental and short-term health options available.

What Is Medigap Insurance?

Medigap insurance is a type of supplemental insurance that can pay costs that Medicare doesn't cover. Like typical supplemental insurance, it provides coverage in addition to your existing coverage.

For example, if you're eligible for Medicare benefits, you may also need help with co-pays and deductibles. Or, if you travel outside of the U.S. a lot, Medicare doesn't cover international medical care. Other out-of-pocket expenses may include medical supplies, home health services, and more.

Medigap insurance can help you prepare for these known expenses, at a rate that works for you. At Adroit Health Group, our licensed insurance agents are knowledgeable about Medicare standard coverage and can help you decide if Medigap insurance would help in your situation.
